Hi all,
what an experience yesterday! I was working normally all day long in my office in Oulu, getting things done pretty well. During the work, I was listening to the great music of the Doors, as the office is still quite empty, because of the summer vacation period. The office has an air condition system and when I left home in the morning, it was pretty fresh, windy and rainy. Taking a look out of the window, it looked like perfect conditions for a nice long run after work, as the temperatures were pretty much ok INSIDE the office. Cloudy, definetely not too hot, a slight chance of rain.
So I finished my work, got all my stuff ready and went outside....*BOOOOOM* It was so hot and humid outside, that I almost lost my breath! The weather was almost like in Hong Kong or Thailand at it's worst days! But as I am not a chicken, I decided to go for the run anyway... with no drinks and no money, clever me :-) Normally, I can easily stand a 2h run without drinking, but this conditions made a change... which was about to experience after a bit more than 1h. So I was just running easily, not too fast and enjoyed the flow. Thinking about this and that, what happened lately in my life - which is quite a lot. A lot of stuff to think about, so perfect set-up for a run. After 45 minutes duration, my tongue was already glued to my palate and all I was able to think about was water, drink, liquid - so no clear thoughts about anything meaningful any more. Then, once of a sudden, all those Doors songs came back on my mind. I am never running with music, but the songs, lyrics and beat of some key songs were playing in my head - without having any mp3 player or headphones with me. "Riders on the Storm", "LA Woman", "Roadhouse Blues" and very often "The End"..... My mind and thoughts were only flying around those songs and I heard myself repeating the lyrics, totally engrossed in my thoughts... "...is this the end? Is this the end, my friend?...." Boy, I never had experiences like that during a running session and I have to say that it was.....great. Just great. Maybe not healthy, as I went in a slight dehydration, but I really felt a bit like being on a psychedelic trip. Wow. Did anybody of you guys out there had those experiences yourself - in a similar or comparable way?!
Somehow I managed to get back home from my trip and I drank directly 2 litres!!! Most probably I needed it... This morning I had to run back to work then, as I left the car in Kempele - but I chose to take the shorter 12k route, in order to avoid to big suffering. The weather is still the same here. Quite odd for northern Finland, I have to say. I hope that it will cool down a bit and training will be a bit more easy - when it comes to the loss of liquids due to the heavy sweating. I don't like carring a bottle with me in normal training sessions. In the Transalpine Run it's something different, we are carrying backpacks with a drinking bladder with us and there are refreshment stops twice day. It's almost impossible to run out of water there...
So, my friends - this was a bit different story today :-)
Peace, Psychedelic Jan
